Christmas with The Palestrina Choir
Palestrina Choir of St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Dublin
Recorded in 2008
A CD of Christmas music is always welcome and when the boys of the Palestrina Choir are involved then this recording takes on a special brilliance. Featuring traditional favourites such God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen and The First Nowell much of the music here is immediately familiar and accessible but it is the less-well known pieces that ‘steal the show’: excerpts from Benjamin Britten’s Ceremony of Carols, the Gregorian chants Hodie Christus Natus Est and Rorate Caeli Desuper and three arresting works by Colin Mawby.
Recorded in the inspiring acoustic of St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Dublin, the Boys and Gentlemen of the Palestrina Choir – with gifted boy trebles Louis Mahon and Christopher Graham, along with organists Gerard Gillen and David Grealy, harpist Andreja Malir all under the sure and sensitive Director, Blánaid Murphy – combine to create an exceptional and high-quality recording that both compels and delights .
