This historical CD showcases some of the best modern music sung during the Liturgical Year by of the Palestrina Choir, interspersed with the better-known sounds of works by master polyphonic composers Vivaldi, Victoria and, of course, Palestrina. Also included are arrangements and new works – specially written by contemporary composers Colin Mawby, Michael McGlynn, John McCann and David Mooney – using ancient liturgical texts sung in a modern musical language: Nunc dimittis, Lauda, anima mea and Ave Maris Stella. Also included are some of the best-loved small pieces by Edward Elgar, Gabriel Fauré and César Franck: Ave Verum Corpus, Pie Jesu and Panis Angelicus.
Recorded in the inspiring acoustic of St Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Dublin, the Boys and Gentlemen of the Palestrina Choir – are accompanied by organists Gerard Gillen and David Connolly and the then newly-appointed Director, Blánaid Murphy – combine to display a rich palette of modern music in a traditional setting performed by the finest of Ireland’s boy choristers.
